Gable:The Powers That Be #1 by Harper Bentley

Rating: Sanzana: 5/5 Stars    Jena: 4/5 Stars

Synopsis:

Gable Powers had all the makings of everything my father had ever warned me about: a reputation that was anything but stellar, a dirty mouth that had me shivering at the things he uttered in my ear, and a body (oh, God, that body) that was covered in tattoos, all of which added up to a solid ten-point-oh on the bad-boy scale.
The first time I met him, I instantly loathed him.
The second time was even worse.
He was a jerk. He was an ass.
     He had secrets.
He was nothing I thought I ever wanted.
So why couldn’t I resist him?

New adult. Not recommended for readers under 17

***Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Okay. That. Fucking. Cover. I'm sorry to start off my review like this but I told Jena if I had a functional printer, I'd be printing this cover and plaster it on my wall, framed. It's the pecs, okay? They just look so...ugh!

Now, not even a chapter through the book, Mr. Nick Bateman was mentioned, and I automatically squealed anyways. Nick is being used to describe the Powers brothers. And for those of you who don't know what Nick Bateman looks like...

And now that I look at it carefully, the cover model and Nick have the same bodily structure...so here we go again with obsessing over how gorgeous Nick is.

So, this book is about...well, Gable and he's one of 4 brothers that we'll get to hear about in this series.

One of my fav quotes from Gable, and it shows exactly how a
typical guy would address such a topic.

Gable is the type of guy who seeks out something and gets it. In this case...it was with Scout. And before you ask, yes, Scout is a girl, do not judge the name.

Scout was a stubborn girl, but for all the good reasons. In this case, it was not letting Gable get what he wants...her. I mean, why wouldn't she? Gable was a jerk and an asshole to her and bluntly made his intentions clear to her, in very vivid detail. Rude? Definitely.

But like any heartstrong woman there is, no one can resist the charm of this guy. I wouldn't be either. When Gable starts to open up to Scout, show her the things he hasn't shown anyone, she warms up to him.

There are a few reasons I liked this book. One, it was an NA novel that is set in college. And for a (nearly) twenty girl such as myself, I like relating with my characters. I was extremely pleased when I got a copy of this book and it didn't disappoint. Secondly, the writing style. This book told from Scout's P.O.V. and you also get the email conversations that "Four" and "Six" have (you'll have to read the book to figure out who these characters are). And if you're anything like me, I love a little bit of dirty, naughty talk here and there, and Harper knew the right moment to place them. I know some authors (very few thankfully) who place sexual words in the most random places and it won't be the "character's" fault, if you know what I mean. So...kudos to you Harper!

Jena's Review

Gable ..... Ohhhh Gable .... oh, oh, oh ... Gable (OK... this is starting to sound like sex.) But I mean, come on ... he is hot and has a mouth that I would like whispering in my ear ... What can I say ... I love a dirty talker. I actually just got this book as a last minute read for review and I wasn't even sure I was going to be able to get to it by release .... Then I read it .... in one day ... ONE DAY!!! It was really quite wonderful!!

So I gave this book a sold four. It was good and I would highly recommend it. Like I really, really would recommend this. Almost to the point I want to rate it like a 4.5 or 5! I can't wait for the next book to come out about Gable's brothers. I am already in love with the Powers brothers!! But then I remember some of the things that frustrated me. It's a hard review to write..... Because I really really did love this book. But I have to warn you of some character flaws. Ok ... enough rambling ... let's get to it.

So of course, I loved Gable. It is kind of your basic bad boy who had his heart broken and became a man whore, but falls for the girl that changes his ways. So if you're done with that story line that I won't recommend this to you. I, however, and not anywhere near done with this storyline ... I love it. Do you hear me ... I. LOVE. IT!!!!

Gable was hot, tattooed, talk, dark, sexy, an ass, a dirty talker. He was everything I want in my bad boy! (I was bummed I never got to hear more about his tattoos ... there was no body exploration ... Booo!!) But I really like him and I liked his change and fall for Scout.

So Scout is the lady in this book and she is probably my main frustration. I liked her ...don't get me wrong. But I was super understanding of her attraction to Gable ... because YUM! ... and I was also a little frustrated with her stereotypical girl-ness. And not in a good way. But in a way that he had absolutely no good qualities (sexy or not) and she was so attracted to him. Like really liked him like he was showing good qualities ... Does that make sense?? No??? I don't always make sense, but I throw it out there. Anywho ... the whole time I wanted to yell at her and tell her to get some freaking self-respect! But she was also funny ... so it was OK .. and she kind of questioned her own self respect in the book ... So maybe that's why I wasn't super bothered by this.

Then at the end she was just being so damn stubborn!!! I mean, I understand stubborn but COME ON!!! I wanted her to give in sooner ... maybe listen to Gable ... but she really dragged it out.

Also, the premise for the angst in the story was ok. I don't want to give away spoilers, but if she knew that he knew then she wasn't a liar because he was doing the same thing she was doing ... you really get a lot of this in the book. Also, I just feel like she was being purposefully obtuse and I wanted her to thing logically for a bit.

But you know what ... I don't even care ... because I loved the book. I loved the story, despite my frustrations, and I flew through it. It was wonderful and I will be impatiently waiting for the next books ... In September ... *breaks down in tears!!* I also loved her friends, Amy and Bodhi. They were funny and I just really liked them. They added the perfect amount in the story. Overall, I highly recommend this book if you love the story line!!! Enjoy!
